Situated in the village of Winterboure Earls in the English county of Wiltshire, and just a few miles north of Salisbury,
the Bourne Valley Nursery School is a pre-school for children from 16 months to school age. For older children we have before school
and after school clubs that pick up and drop of kids to their big school. During the holidays we run clubs for children,
to help parents who have to work, and for just plain old fun for the kids.

Our Aims
The aim of our Nursery is
to provide a happy, safe, and stimulating environment in which all children feel
secure and valued and where we can all enjoy ourselves and have fun!
We want your children
-
to become rounded, balanced individuals
with a positive outlook.
-
to develop a thirst for knowledge and an
enthusiasm for learning, believing that if they try they can succeed and reach
their potential.
-
to be confident and independent
irrespective of academic ability.
-
to have a sense of respect for
themselves, others and the environment.
-
to experience equal opportunities
regardless of gender, race or ability.
As a team working within a
happy family atmosphere, the staff at Bourne Valley Nursery want to ensure that
your child grows up with confidence during these early years and develops a
natural desire to learn.
|
| We believe in developing the ‘whole
child’ where individuals are able to explore, experiment, plan and make
decisions for themselves, whilst building on what they already know and can do.
We aim to achieve this by: |
-
providing a rich and stimulating
environment that is well planned, well organised and carefully structured by
the staff who understand the needs of young children at this time of rapid
development.
-
working in partnership with parents and
carers together contributing to each child’s successful development.
-
providing a curriculum that will develop
children, emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. In a way that
will be relevant and appropriate, matching the different levels of our young
children’s needs.
-
providing a well-trained team who have a
good understanding of how children develop and learn, and who through their
own training, observation and interaction with the children, are able to
provide opportunities and support to help them succeed.
Research into Child Development places
an ever-increasing importance on the value of these early years. We keep up to
date with current research and are fully committed to providing each child with
the foundation skills and attitudes essential for a happy transition to Primary
School.
We follow the foundation stage of the
National Curriculum and are inspected by OFSTED.
All About Us
Bourne Valley Nursery
School was opened in April 2001 and is owned and managed jointly by Susan
Braidley and Gaenor Nokes. We are both fully qualified teachers with some 22
years experience between us. We share an affinity with early years learning and
derive great job satisfaction from running this vibrant nursery. We are
commited to maintaining a happy working/learning environment for staff and
children alike. We are currently towards the Investors in People Award.
The nursery is situated in
the village of Winterbourne Earls, 3 miles north of Salisbury and is housed in
the recently converted old village school (circa 1870). We benefit from a large
outside playground, pets corner and gardens.
We welcome children from 16
months to 5 years of age. We are open from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday for 47 weeks
of the year. The Nursery is organised into three rooms:
n
The Yellow Room
takes up to 7 children from 16 months to 2.5 years, with two members of staff.
n
The Green Room
takes up to 18 children from 2.5 years to 3.5 years with four members of staff.
n
The Purple Room
takes up to 28 children from 3.5 years to 5 years with four members of staff and
a trainee.
(Your child is always with the same adults for
every session, their responsible adult is known as their Keyworker enabling the
children to form firm bonds with them).
A whole team approach ensures a smooth
progression through the rooms. The nursery is open from 8am to 6pm Monday to
Friday offering a wide range of sessions to suit your needs.
-
Our
basic sessions are 9am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm. Other sessions can
then be added on to extend this time, for example a full morning and lunch is
8am to 1.30pm.
-
We
offer a 10% discount for full weekly bookings, and a 10% sibling discount
(only 1 discount may operate at a time).
-
We
require a minimum booking of two sessions a week.
-
The
Nursery is closed for 2 weeks at Christmas, a week at Easter, 2 weeks in
August and Bank Holidays.
When you come to have a look around the
nursery you will be able to discuss your needs in detail with the managers.

The
Structure of Our Day
All three rooms in the Nursery consist of the
same elements. The children become familiar with the titles, what they involve
and what is expected. This ensures continuity for the children as they move from
room to room, giving each child a sense of security and confidence through
familiarity.
All the rooms begin their sessions (9a.m. and
1.30p.m.) with
FREE PLAY:
Coming in to free play allows each child to
settle in to an activity of their choice, it gives parents the opportunity to
play alongside for a while if they wish and also makes time for parents and
staff to share information as and when necessary.
During free play a range of activities is
provided, this range is extended as the children move through the Nursery. In
all rooms the children are encouraged to make choices and decisions, the adults
role is to support and extend the children’s play, while giving the children the
control. If a new child is visiting or an existing child is getting ready to
move to their next room visits will take place during free play. For new
children three visits are recommended, the first for approximately 30 minutes
with a parent or carer, the second for a 30 minutes visit on their own and the
third for 1hour on their own. The child’s Keyworker will visit alongside
children who are moving up a room.
TIDY UP TIME:
All the children help to tidy up in a way that is appropriate to their stage of
development. The youngest children help put toys in their boxes, the older
children put the toys in boxes and help to find their place in the units, much
equipment is stored at child height to allow this.
OUTSIDE PLAY:
Each room has approximately half an hour each session outside. The versatile
outside area has provision for many different activities - large apparatus,
bikes and cars, stilts, imaginative play, small apparatus, quiet activities,
gardening, parachute games etc. During this time the adults participate in the
games alongside the children.
SNACK TIME:
This takes place twice a day and is a very sociable event, the children sit
together at a table with the adults for a drink of milk or squash and fruit or a
biscuit. During good weather the groups may use the picnic benches outside.
Drinks are always available to the children in the rooms throughout the day at
their request.
CIRCLE TIME:
Here the children take part in a focused group activity linked to fortnightly
themes which will promote social interaction that builds self esteem and
confidence whilst stimulating effective learning. The activities and size of
the circle develop to match the abilities of the children. Circle times may
include exploring and talking about the world around them, acting out stories,
singing rhymes etc.
STRUCTURED PLAY:
At this time the children are in their Keyworker groups, their Keyworker will
have planned an activity specifically to meet the educational needs of the
children in the group on that day. The Keyworker will have observed the
children, and planned a challenging activity that reinforces and develops a
specific need. The activities develop and become more challenging to match the
abilities of the specific children.
STORY TIME:
Concludes
each session, a quieter time to
reflect on the day and enjoy sharing books. It includes not only telling
stories, but using props, listening to poems, singing songs and rhymes, having
big books and book bags.

Our
Curriculum
Our Curriculum meets the requirements as
described in the Government’s Foundation Stage document. The Foundation Stage
applies to 3-5 year olds. For children under 3 years we provide a curriculum
that compliments this and is appropriate to their individual needs.
To provide a consistent approach throughout
the Nursery we use the terms from the Foundation Stage document to describe
our curriculum. Copies of the Foundation stage document are available for
parents to borrow.
The curriculum we
provide covers 6 areas:
These areas cannot be ordered by
importance and are not experienced in isolation. They overlap and interlink,
one activity can often involve all six areas. We pride ourselves in our
holistic approach to Nursery Education.
Social, Emotional and Personal
A child’s confidence and self-esteem is often
a reflection of how others regard the child. We teach mutual respect and
provide stable adult and peer relationships in a calm and safe environment.
As children
progress through the Nursery they are given increasing opportunities for
autonomy, decision-making and giving direction to their own activities. There
is a clear expectation of responsibility for the use and care of equipment and
people’s work, encouraging a sharing, co-operative approach to all activities.
(from Exhibition on ‘Quality Early Years Practice’ Duckworth 2000).
We have
a Behaviour Policy, which emphasises positive attitudes, enabling children to
develop strategies that promote effective social skills.
We recognise different cultures represented
in the Nursery and in the local community. Various cultures are included in
our planning, using a wide range of representative resources and celebrating a
number of festivals. We welcome ideas/resources from parents that relate to
their child’s experience. Our Equal Opportunities Policy reinforces our belief
that all children have the right to experience the full range of activities
promoting sexual and racial equality. We are committed to developing your
child’s sense of awareness and respect for their widening world.
Communication,
Language and Literacy:
Throughout each session the children have
many opportunities to practise all four crucial elements of language and
literacy: Speaking, listening, reading and writing. We focus on the
preliminary skills that need to be fully developed before reading and writing
can be taught more formally.
You will be well aware how quickly children
expand their spoken vocabulary, once they understand the necessity of speech
they will thrive in a language rich environment. All our staff have excellent
skills to extend your child’s vocabulary and ability
to form proper sentences. It is important that children establish the muscles
in their hands before being taught how to grip a pencil correctly; fine motor
activities such as doing up nuts and bolts on construction toys, manipulating
play dough, putting pegs in a peg board etc. are essential. Drawing and
painting with increasing control will lead to the readiness to write.
Children will learn more easily if they are aware of the logic associated with
given tasks, from day one with us they will be gaining an insight to the
importance of the spoken and written word. We have an extensive range of
texts available and during the term before they enter school a book bag will
be taken home each week which will contain books, objects of interest and pre
reading activity.
A multi-sensory approach is used in the
nursery and many children are able to write their name and have a good
awareness of the phonetic alphabet before they start ‘Big School’.
World
Knowledge.
In order to learn new skills and retain
information children need to start at a point within their own experience that
they understand and have confidence. With this firm base they can then be
guided to expand their knowledge and cope with more abstract ideas.
We incorporate a range
of stimulating topics to enhance their awareness of the vibrant world around
them.
Conversation is brought
alive with ‘hands on’ experience on their feet! These are learning experiences
children remember – fun and enjoyment are vital educational ingredients.
Physical
Children develop physical skills such as
dexterity, co-ordination, balance and body control through the development of
their muscle control and strength, as well as body and spatial awareness.
Each session provides a variety of
opportunities for children to develop these skills. Gross motor skills
eg. running, jumping, music and movement, using small and large equipment.
Fine motor skills e.g. cutting, threading, painting, construction, play
dough, sand, are available during the day.
We benefit from large and stimulating grounds
and indoors our ‘soft play’ equipment provides us with unlimited gross motor
activities.
We have areas of grass,
safety tarmac and flower gardens helping to enhance all areas of our
curriculum.
Creative and Aesthetic
We nurture creative and aesthetic development
through experiences in art, language, music, movement, imaginative play and
natural science. The children are encouraged to represent, experiment and
interpret in many different ways, evaluating and appreciating their own work
and that of others. Our wall displays show that we value each child’s
contribution and we welcome you to look at these with your child, encouraging
them to tell you about activities they have taken part in at Nursery.
Mathematical
development depends on becoming confident and competent in learning, using key
skills such as counting, sorting, matching, finding patterns, making
connections and recognising mathematical relationships. The concepts explored
are extended as your child progresses through the Nursery.
Opportunity for
development includes work with numbers, shapes, space and measures often
through stories, songs, games, imaginative and investigative play.
We place a great
emphasis on practical application experiment and enjoyment. This builds firm
foundation skills that are relevant and appropriate at each stage of your
child’s learning.
Accidents,
if your child has an accident the details are written in the Accident Book, you
will be asked to sign this and have time to discuss the event with your child’s
Key Worker.
Before and After School Club,
we provide care for children already at primary school from 8am to 6pm, taking
them to and from school (inc. snack and tea). This is open to children from
Winterbourne Earls, Idmiston and Gomeldon Schools. Please ask for our separate
Out of School brochure.
Book Bags,
each week during the term before the children go to school they will receive a
book bag; a collection of books, objects and games around a theme. These are for
the whole family to share and enjoy; they have proved to be an excellent step
between reading readiness and the scheme books they will later receive from
Primary school.
Child Protection,
as a provider of day
care registered with Ofsted, we are required to follow the Child Protection
procedures
agreed through the Area
Child Protection Committee in Wiltshire. As a provider involved in the care of
your child, we will try at all times to share any concerns. However, we do have
a duty to refer to Social Services if we suspect that child abuse may be an
issue. Our first concern will always be the welfare of your child. There is a
copy of the Child Protection in Wiltshire Procedures and Guidance for you to see
if you wish. You may also see Bourne Valley’s Child Protection Policy. Our local
Social Services Duty Office address is District Office, Salt Lane, Salisbury,
01722 327551.
Complaints,
if you have a complaint please come and talk to Susan or Gaenor who will discuss
this at an appropriate time/place. We will do our best to resolve the problem
promptly with mutual agreement. You may contact Ofsted on 020 742 16800.
Development Profiles
are kept for each child from entry onwards, these are confidential. Parents are
welcome to see, discuss and add to their child’s profile at any time. These will
be referred to when writing profiles for you to pass on to their Reception Class
Teacher when they start School.
Deposits,
a deposit of one month’s fees is paid to secure your child’s place. This will be
deducted from your final invoice if you give four weeks notice in writing of
your child’s leaving date.
Fire Safety,
we have frequent fire drills and all fire equipment is checked regularly.
Procedures are displayed in each room.
First Aid,
we continually update several members of staff with First Aid Training from the
British Red Cross.
Holiday Club,
the club runs during the Easter, Summer and half term holidays. It is open to
children from 5yrs to 11yrs of age and takes place in the well equipped Orange
Room. (Please see our separate brochure for details.)
Head Lice,
if anyone in your family has head lice don’t panic!! They are a fact in this
modern age! We have been very successful at keeping them at bay and would ask
you to please treat your child’s hair before bringing them to Nursery and tie
long hair back. If we discover your child has head lice we will phone you
immediately and advise you on up-to-date treatment.
Illness,
it is at your discretion to decide if your child is not fit for Nursery please
warn us if your child is under the weather. In the event of vomiting or
diarrhoea please ensure they have been clear for 24 hours before returning to
Nursery. If they become ill at Nursery or develop a temperature we will contact
you immediately to discuss the best action.
Inspections,
the Nursery is inspected by OFSTED and Environmental Health. We will keep you
informed and make the relevant documents available at your request.
Logo,
our logo can be found on
staff and children’s clothing, our sign and on the front of this brochure.
Amy-Rose Nokes from the Purple Room drew it after an exciting afternoon building
a Duplo tower to touch the ceiling!
Meals,
we provide a wide variety of nutritious, freshly cooked lunches and teas (for
children staying after 4pm) and endeavour to cater for any special dietary needs
as requested. A menu is displayed on the kitchen door.
M Medicines,
if your child requires medicine for an infectious illness please keep them at
home. If they need medicine during the day you will need to sign the medicine
book in your child’s room and give the clearly labelled bottle to your child’s
Keyworker, please make sure you collect it again at the end of the session.
Moving Rooms,
Approx. 6 weeks before it is time for your child to move up a room their future
Keyworker will visit them in their own room. Visits will then be arranged to
their new room, initially with their current Keyworker and other children who
are also moving up. Your current Keyworker will introduce you to the new
room/staff and inform you of your child’s visits, ensuring a smooth transition
for you and your child.
Newsletter,
we produce a regular newsletter informing you of important dates and events,
sharing news, and asking for help! Should you misplace your copy one is on
display on the glass doors.
Outings,
when ratios allow (1:2 for under 3's and 1:3 for over 3's) we are able to take
the children out into the local area, the park, to the river, through the
fields.... In the Summer Term we have an outing further a field to Moors Valley,
Cholderton Rare Breeds, Finkley Down Farm or like wise. Permission slips are
kept on file.
Pushchairs and car seats,
if it is necessary to leave these at Nursery please store them behind the main
door.
Parent’s Evening,
these take place twice a
year and give both you and the keyworker an opportunity to share information
about your child.
