We share your concern in your child’s wellbeing and it is important that together we provide continuity between life at home and life in the Nursery.
It is important that you have peace of mind while your child is in our care. We will work closely with you to ensure your child adapts to Nursery life quickly and happily. This support continues throughout your child’s time at Nursery.
Your child is assigned a keyworker who, on a daily basis, can tell you what your child has been up to and what is planned for future days. They are on hand for a friendly chat, or on a more formal basis, to discuss any issues that may concern you.
Parent ‘ I have always felt my child is important to you, and walk away in confidence that they are being very well cared for in my absence’
Parent ‘The high level of information given made me feel involved in my child’s day even though I wasn’t present, I also felt involved in the nursery organisation’

Our Curriculum meets the requirements as described in the Government’s Foundation Stage document. The Foundation Stage applies to 3-5 year olds. For children under 3 years we work with the Birth to Three curriculum that compliments this and is appropriate to their individual needs. From September 2008 we will be working with the new Early Years Foundation Stage, which covers from birth to the end of Reception Class at School (5yrs). We will keep you up to date on how we will be using this curriculum and any changes it will create.
To provide a consistent approach throughout the Nursery we use the terms from the Foundation Stage document to describe our curriculum. Copies of the Foundation stage document are available for parents to borrow.
The curriculum we provide covers 6 areas:
These areas cannot be ordered by importance and are not experienced in isolation. They overlap and interlink, one activity can often involve all six areas. We pride ourselves in our holistic approach to Nursery Education.
Social, Emotional and Personal
A child’s confidence and self-esteem is often a reflection of how others regard the child. We teach mutual respect and provide stable adult and peer relationships in a calm and safe environment.
As children progress through the Nursery they are given increasing opportunities for autonomy, decision-making and giving direction to their own activities. There is a clear expectation of responsibility for the use and care of equipment and people’s work, encouraging a sharing, co-operative approach to all activities.
‘’The development of intelligence is a matter of having wonderful ideas and feeling confident enough to try them out’’
(from Exhibition on ‘Quality Early Years Practice’ Duckworth 2000).
We have a Behaviour Policy (see below), which emphasises positive attitudes, enabling children to develop strategies that promote effective social skills.
We recognise different cultures represented in the Nursery and in the local community. Various cultures are included in our planning, using a wide range of representative resources and celebrating a number of festivals. We welcome ideas/resources from parents that relate to their child’s experience. Our Equal Opportunities Policy reinforces our belief that all children have the right to experience the full range of activities promoting sexual and racial equality. We are committed to developing your child’s sense of awareness and respect for their widening world.
Communication, Language and Literacy:
Throughout each session the children have many opportunities to practise all four crucial elements of language and literacy: Speaking, listening, reading and writing. We focus on the preliminary skills that need to be fully developed before reading and writing can be taught more formally.
You will be well aware how quickly children expand their spoken vocabulary, once they understand the necessity of speech they will thrive in a language rich environment. All our staff have excellent skills to extend your child’s vocabulary and ability to form proper sentences. It is important that children establish the muscles in their hands before being taught how to grip a pencil correctly; fine motor activities such as doing up nuts and bolts on construction toys, manipulating play dough, putting pegs in a peg board etc. are essential. Drawing and painting with increasing control will lead to the readiness to write. Children will learn more easily if they are aware of the logic associated with given tasks, from day one with us they will be gaining an insight to the importance of the spoken and written word. We have an extensive range of texts available and during the term before they enter school a book bag will be taken home each week which will contain books, objects of interest and pre reading activity.
A multi-sensory approach is used in the Nursery and many children are able to write their name and have a good awareness of the phonetic alphabet before they start ‘Big School’.
In order to learn new skills and retain information children need to start at a point within their own experience that they understand and have confidence. With this firm base they can then be guided to expand their knowledge and cope with more abstract ideas. We incorporate a range of stimulating topics to enhance their awareness of the vibrant world around them.
Conversation is brought alive with ‘hands on’ experience on their feet! These are learning experiences children remember – fun and enjoyment are vital educational ingredients.
Children develop physical skills such as dexterity, co-ordination, balance and body control through the development of their muscle control and strength, as well as body and spatial awareness. Each session provides a variety of opportunities for children to develop these skills. Gross motor skills eg. running, jumping, music and movement, using small and large equipment. Fine motor skills e.g. cutting, threading, painting, construction, play dough, sand, are available during the day.
We benefit from large and stimulating grounds and indoors our ‘soft play’ equipment provides us with unlimited gross motor activities. We have areas of grass, safety tarmac and flower gardens helping to enhance all areas of our curriculum.
We nurture creative and aesthetic development through experiences in art, language, music, movement, imaginative play and natural science. The children are encouraged to represent, experiment and interpret in many different ways, evaluating and appreciating their own work and that of others. Our wall displays show that we value each child’s contribution and we welcome you to look at these with your child, encouraging them to tell you about activities they have taken part in at Nursery.
Mathematical development depends on becoming confident and competent in learning, using key skills such as counting, sorting, matching, finding patterns, making connections and recognising mathematical relationships. The concepts explored are extended as your child progresses through the Nursery. Opportunity for development includes work with numbers, shapes, space and measures often through stories, songs, games, imaginative and investigative play.
We place a great emphasis on practical application experiment and enjoyment. This builds firm foundation skills that are relevant and appropriate at each stage of your child’s learning.
Accidents, if your child has an accident the details are written in the Accident Book, you will be asked to sign this and have time to discuss the event with your child’s Key Worker.
Before and After School Club, we provide care for children already at primary school from 8am to 6pm, taking them to and from school (inc. snack and tea). This is open to children from Winterbourne Earls, Idmiston and Gomeldon Schools. Please ask for our separate Out of School brochure.
Book Bags, in Purple Room the children can choose to take home a book bag; a collection of books, objects and games around a theme. These are for the whole family to share and enjoy; they have proved to be an excellent step between reading readiness and the scheme books they will later receive from Primary school.
Child Protection, as a provider of day care registered with Ofsted, we are required to follow the Child Protection procedures agreed through the Area Child Protection Committee in Wiltshire. As a provider involved in the care of your child, we will try at all times to share any concerns. However, we do have a duty to refer to Social Services if we suspect that child abuse may be an issue. Our first concern will always be the welfare of your child. There is a copy of the Child Protection in Wiltshire Procedures and Guidance for you to see if you wish. You may also see Bourne Valley’s Child Protection Policy at the bottom of the page. Our local Social Services Duty Office address is District Office, Salt Lane, Salisbury, 01722 327551.
Complaints, if you have a complaint please come and talk to Susan or Gaenor who will discuss this at an appropriate time/place. We will do our best to resolve the problem promptly with mutual agreement. We do have a Complaints record book stored in the Office if you wish to make a formal complaint. You may contact Ofsted on 020 742 16800.
Development Profiles are kept for each child from entry onwards, these are confidential. Parents are welcome to see, discuss and add to their child’s profile at any time. These will be referred to when writing profiles for you to pass on to their Reception Class Teacher when they start School.
Fire Safety, we have frequent fire drills and all fire equipment is checked regularly. Procedures are displayed in each room.
First Aid, we continually update several members of staff with First Aid Training from the British Red Cross.
Holiday Club, the club runs during the Easter, Summer and half term holidays. It is open to children from 5yrs to 11yrs of age and takes place in the well equipped large room in the main building. (Please see our separate brochure for details.)
Head Lice, if anyone in your family has head lice don’t panic!! They are a fact in this modern age! We have been very successful at keeping them at bay and would ask you to please treat your child’s hair before bringing them to Nursery and tie long hair back. If we discover your child has head lice we will phone you immediately and advise you on up-to-date treatment.
Illness, it is at your discretion to decide if your child is not fit for Nursery please warn us if your child is under the weather. In the event of vomiting or diarrhoea please ensure they have been clear for 24 hours before returning to Nursery. If they become ill at Nursery or develop a temperature we will contact you immediately to discuss the best action.
Inspections, the Nursery is inspected by OFSTED and Environmental Health. We will keep you informed and make the relevant documents available at your request.
Logo, our logo can be found on staff and children’s clothing, our sign and on the front of this brochure. Amy-Rose Nokes from the Purple Room drew it after an exciting afternoon building a Duplo tower to touch the ceiling!
Meals, we provide a wide variety of nutritious, freshly cooked lunches and teas (for children staying after 4pm) and endeavour to cater for any special dietary needs as requested. A menu is displayed on the kitchen door.
Medicines, if your child requires medicine for an infectious illness please keep them at home. If they need medicine during the day you will need to sign the medicine book in your child’s room and give the clearly labelled bottle to your child’s Keyworker, please make sure you collect it again at the end of the session.
Moving Rooms, Approx. 6 weeks before it is time for your child to move up a room their future Keyworker will visit them in their own room. Visits will then be arranged to their new room, initially with their current Keyworker and other children who are also moving up. Your current Keyworker will introduce you to the new room/staff and inform you of your child’s visits, ensuring a smooth transition for you and your child.
Newsletter, we produce a regular newsletter informing you of important dates and events, sharing news, and asking for help! Should you misplace your copy one is on display on the glass doors.
Outings, when ratios allow (1:2 for under 3's and 1:3 for over 3's) we are able to take the children out into the local area, the park, to the river, through the fields.... In the Summer Term we have an outing further a field to Moors Valley, Cholderton Rare Breeds, Finkley Down Farm or like wise. Permission slips are kept on file.
Pushchairs and car seats, if it is necessary to leave these at Nursery please store them behind the main door.
Parent’s Evening, these take place twice a year and give both you and the keyworker an opportunity to share information about your child.
Parking, please park in the large car park at the rear of the Nursery. When leaving please give way to the traffic coming in from the main road. It is illegal to reverse onto a main road, departing vehicles should reverse to the car park.

At Bourne Valley Nursery School it is our priority to ensure that the children in our care are in an environment in which they will be safe from abuse and in which any suspicion of abuse is promptly dealt with in an appropriate way.The first designated member of staff is Susan Braidley, and the second is Gaenor Nokes.
In order to achieve this we will:
· ensure that all staff /volunteers /students have had the relevant Police Checks. Any adults who have not been screened will not be left in sole charge of any children, in any circumstance.
· provide training to ensure that all staff involved in the nursery can confidently recognise the symptoms of possible abuse, physical neglect, emotional, or sexual.
· training will be regularly carried out to update and refresh staff’s knowledge. New staff will be made aware of Child Protection Issues and Procedures at their initial induction.
· children will be able to develop a sense of autonomy and independence through adult support in making choices and expressing their own feelings. This aims to enable children to have the self confidence and the vocabulary to resist inappropriate approaches and to tell others.
· the layout of the Nursery and the deployment of staff will permit constant supervision of all children.
· Child protection will be included regularly (at least every 6 months) in full staff meetings.
Our Procedure for Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Negligence.
· Changes in children’s behaviour will be monitored and sensitively investigated. This information is initially kept in the keyworker’s confidential file or in the confidential SEN file in the office depending on the individual case. Parents are encouraged to inform their child’s keyworker of any changes in the family situation at home, for example if a parent is away from home, so some concerns can be explained. This can be raised at a Room Meeting and proceed to Managers Meeting. The designated person will then contact the local Child Protection Team (01722 327551) for advice if there are still concerns.
· If a member of staff has a major concern about a child’s behaviour or an aspect of their physical appearance they go directly to the designated person and a specific and confidential record will be set up; quite separate from the child’s ongoing development record. This will be stored in the office in the confidential SEN file. The report will include a summary of the reasons for the concern including pictorial representations where necessary which will be passed on to the Child Protection Team if needed. Observations will be made which will be dated, timed and consist of an objective record of the child’s behaviour or appearance without comment or interpretation. These observations will include the child’s comments where possible and will be signed by the adult who witnessed them.
· The designated person will immediately contact the Child Protection Team to share their concerns and to ask for advice on how to proceed and how to inform parents.
· All concerns and investigations will be strictly confidential, with only those adults involved having access to information. Any reports written from these observations will be made available to the parents involved.
· When investigations are taking place the nursery will endeavour to continue to provide care without unnecessary interruption. The managers will refer to the Equal Opportunities Policy to support the family’s inclusion without prejudice.

Behaviour Management Policy
Gaenor Nokes is the staff member within the setting who is responsible for behaviour management issues. At Bourne Valley Nursery all adults are consistent with the handling of children’s behaviour in a way that promotes their welfare and development respecting individual children’s level of understanding and maturity. Nursery wide the team will create an environment that encourages good behaviour and high self-esteem.
Physical punishments, or the threat of them, are NOT used. Adults do not use any form of physical intervention, e.g. holding, unless it is necessary to prevent personal injury to the child, other children, an adult or serious damage to property. NB any incident of this nature is recorded in the ‘physical interventions’ book (kept in the upstairs office and is confidential) and the parent informed of the incident on that day. All members of Team attend regular behaviour management courses provided by Wiltshire County Council.
